Anna Fuiava, head of our Civil Litigation team, is an experienced civil litigator, appearing in the District and High Courts and various tribunals. Clients value her pragmatic advice across commercial, property, estate, and employment disputes and she undertakes a range of civil legal aid cases.
Last year she made her first appearance in a three-day arbitration before an Association of Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) appointed arbitrator.
The experience cemented her determination to further develop her skills in this growth area. It also made a big impression on the Institute, which selected her as one of its two scholars for 2023.
The scholarship programme aims to grow diversity and leadership throughout the dispute resolution sector by providing learning opportunities, mentorship, and leadership development for two rising stars each year.
Anna will take part in observation days with senior dispute resolution practitioners and be mentored by a senior AMINZ member. She will also present at the collegial AMINZ Conference on a dispute resolution topic of her choice.
Scholars will be asked to submit a report with recommendations to AMINZ Council on how the Institute can further foster diversity in the sector. For Anna, a Chinese New Zealander, this is an opportunity to play an important part, to ensure access to justice continues to grow across Aotearoa.
Anna referred to the scholarship as a ‘fantastic initiative’ as she thanked AMINZ for the opportunity. She looks forward to using her learnings to the benefit of DB’s clients and her team.
While litigation continues to be an important tool for resolving legal disputes, New Zealand follows a worldwide trend towards out-of-court settlements that is likely to continue as parties seek to resolve disputes in a more efficient, cost-effective, and tailored manner.
Denham Bramwell congratulates Anna on the scholarship and welcomes the career development opportunities that come with it. Anna’s legal career goes from strength to strength with this recognition from AMINZ, the leading advocate in New Zealand for dispute resolution.
