Over one thousand three hundred New Zealand lawyers lend their expertise and time to the legal profession as volunteers with the Law Society. One is our Associate Anna Fuiava, who heads up Denham Bramwell’s Civil Litigation team.
Anna’s work on the Access to Justice Committee started in 2017. It has enabled her to provide an insider's view on legal aid – an issue close to her heart.
"I was at a stage of my career where I was keen to volunteer on committees for my professional development and personal interest. I've always been interested in legal advocacy," Anna says.
The Access to Justice committee monitors proposals that affect access to justice, in particular, the operation of the legal aid system, advocating on behalf of lawyers and their clients to ensure access to justice for New Zealanders. It's one of 17 law reform committees that assist in drafting and reviewing the Law Society's submissions on bills and discussion papers and advocating for improvements across the law.
“It allows me to step back to look at the profession as a whole in the wider society, making sure we are serving the people that we’re there to serve the best we can,” Anna says.
A mother of two children, Anna admits she is an "over-committer", but being on the Access to Justice committee is well worth the time and effort. The flexible working environment at Denham Bramwell assists her in juggling family life with her professional commitments. Feeling supported at work when you are under pressure from many directions helps make it all possible.
"I found the benefits of meeting other practitioners and advocating with them for legal aid and the people using the services from behind the scenes much outweighed any time commitment and worries I had.” She concludes.
Denham Bramwell encourages and supports its lawyers at all stages of their professional development to expand their networks and influence the issues affecting their peers and clients. Volunteering for committees is a structured path to achieving this and one we highly recommend.
Anna was one of three volunteers recently featured in LawTalk, the Law Society’s magazine. Read the full article here.

Why you need an Enduring Power Of Attorney (EPA)
An EPA allows you to choose who will make decisions for you in the future if injury or illness means you can’t make decisions or manage your own affairs. If something happens to you and you do not have an EPA, your family would have to apply to the Family Court to be able to act on your behalf
